Harnessing Your Inner Talk for Growth

Your inner dialogue, your self-talk – is it supporting you or putting you down? 💥 Are you your biggest believer or your harshest critic? 🗝 Build your Growth Mindset with this practice 🗝

Is your inner voice helping or criticising?

We all have a voice in our head, an inner dialogue. Is yours positive and supportive, helping you move forward? Or is it negative, criticising you and putting you down?

A simple test

If you said it out loud to a friend or family member, what would their reaction be? If it is negative, they would be shocked and would not stay around for long. Yet we often choose to speak to ourselves this way.

Why it matters

How we speak to ourselves directly affects how we feel and what we do. How we feel and what we do directly affects the results we get.

The practice

  1. Be aware of what you are saying to yourself: the words and the tone.
  2. Notice its effect on you.
  3. With that awareness you have a choice. Change it to a more supportive message.

You know that voice in your head, that inner dialogue? Don’t worry, we all have one, and it’s okay to admit it. When you’re consciously aware of it, is it positive and supportive? Is it helping you move forward in life? Or is it more negative, maybe criticising yourself, putting yourself down, focusing on the negative? There’s a big difference between those two voices. If it’s negative, and you said it out loud to a friend or family member, what would their reaction be? I’m guessing they’d be really shocked, and they wouldn’t stay around for long. Yet often we choose to speak this way to ourselves. How we speak to ourselves directly affects how we feel and what we do, and how we feel and what we do directly affects the results we get. So a hugely powerful growth mindset practice is to be aware of your inner dialogue. Once you have awareness, you have a choice. You create the choice to be more supportive, to play a better message in your mind. So the challenge is: be consciously aware of what you’re saying to yourself, what it sounds like, the tone, the actual words, and be aware of its effect on you. With that awareness, change it into a more supportive message. It’s a key part of your growth mindset.
